Opening Context
The rectangular 6010SA belongs to an interesting transitional period in Audemars Piguet history. Introduced in the early 1980s, it borrowed heavily from the design vocabulary established by the Royal Oak—integrated bracelet architecture, exposed structural details and sharply defined surfaces—but Audemars Piguet’s own archives identify the 6010 as part of its contemporary “AP Quartz Line” rather than a formally named Royal Oak. Today, the reference is commonly described in the secondary market as a rectangular or ladies’ Royal Oak because the family resemblance is unmistakable.
In two-tone steel and 18K yellow gold, the 6010SA translates that design language into a much smaller, more jewellery-like format. Its rectangular case and integrated bracelet feel very different from the familiar octagonal Royal Oak while retaining the same interest in contrasting metal surfaces and geometric construction.

Why This Reference Matters
The 6010SA reflects a period when Audemars Piguet was actively experimenting with quartz technology and smaller case formats. Quartz was not treated simply as an inexpensive alternative: the ultra-thin Calibre 2502 allowed AP to create compact watches with proportions that would have been difficult to achieve with many mechanical movements of the period. Audemars Piguet records the 6010 among a group of 1981 models, many of which used the 1.98 mm-thick Calibre 2502.
Visually, this example is particularly well resolved. The grey Petite Tapisserie-style dial provides texture against the polished yellow gold markers and AP monogram, while the two-tone bracelet extends the steel-and-gold contrast continuously around the wrist. The result sits somewhere between sports watch and jewellery watch, which is very much part of its period charm.

On the Wrist
At approximately 25 x 32 mm, the 6010SA wears genuinely small by modern standards. That scale should be understood as part of the design rather than something to be compared directly with contemporary Royal Oaks. It sits close to the wrist, with the integrated bracelet making the watch feel more like a continuous piece of metalwork than a conventional watch on a strap.
The combination of stainless steel and yellow gold gives it more visual presence than the dimensions suggest. The grey dial keeps the overall palette restrained, while the gold bezel, markers and bracelet elements add warmth. For collectors comfortable with compact vintage proportions, it offers an elegant and distinctly period way to wear Audemars Piguet design.

Condition & Transparency
This example is presented with an integrated stainless steel and 18K yellow gold bracelet with folding clasp. Specific information regarding case and bracelet condition, polishing history, bracelet stretch, dial and hand condition, crystal, box and papers, and previous servicing has not been provided. Originality of the individual bracelet and clasp should therefore be confirmed rather than assumed. The quartz Calibre 2502 is specified for this reference; battery condition and recent replacement history have not been provided.

Why It Belongs in a Collection
The 6010SA suits a collector interested in the less obvious branches of Audemars Piguet’s design history. It comes from the era when the Royal Oak aesthetic was expanding beyond its original mechanical steel sports-watch formula into quartz movements, precious-metal combinations and smaller formats.
It also offers a useful reminder that quartz has a legitimate place within high-end Swiss watchmaking history. Here, the movement enabled an exceptionally compact case, while the real pleasure of the watch comes from its dial, bracelet construction and unmistakably AP approach to finishing and geometry. Within a collection of larger mechanical watches, that difference can be precisely what gives it relevance.

Closing
The Audemars Piguet 6010SA is a small watch with an unusually interesting place in the manufacture’s early-1980s history. Its rectangular proportions, grey textured dial, two-tone integrated bracelet and slim Calibre 2502 capture a period when Audemars Piguet was actively exploring how its emerging sports-watch design language could evolve. It is not simply a reduced Royal Oak, but a distinctive period expression of the ideas surrounding it.
